Gold leaf vases & bowls for a uber luxury look

I found this article in the latest Ideas Magazine and it inspired me to get creative.  I have never heard of gold leafing before, but I’m giving it a try this week.  The difference between this technique and say, just painting gold paint onto an object, from what I’ve discovered, is that this creates a look much more alike to real gold, whereas gold paint will most likely have streaks and still look like paint.

It is similar in technique to decoupage-you paint a thin layer of glue onto the object, wait for it to get a bit sticky and then gently place a piece of the gold paper onto the glue.  You can finish it off with a coat of varnish as an optional extra.

The Deckle Edge sell gold leaf at R65 for 25 14cm x 14cm sheets.  Apparently you don’t need to buy the glue, you can just use diluted cold/wood glue.

In the article, one great idea which they had was to paper mache bowls and then gold leaf the inside of the bowl, while painting the outside of the bowl another colour (they used black and white).  To paper mache bowls, all you have to do is blow up a balloon, cut out and stick the bottom of a polystyrene cup onto the top of the balloon (for a base), and use diluted wood glue to stick layer after layer of newspaper around the top of the balloon & polystyrene base.  It’s easiest if you rest the balloon upside down in a mug so it stays put.

I’m in the process of making my paper mache bowls at the moment…hopefully a post next week will be my finished products!
